What to Expect at Your First Meeting
Your first Families Anonymous meeting may feel like a big step. Knowing a little about what to expect can help you feel more comfortable before you arrive.
Welcome to Your First Meeting
It is completely normal to feel nervous, uncertain or emotional before attending your first Families Anonymous meeting. You do not need to know anything about FA beforehand and you do not have to tell your story. You are welcome to simply listen and take everything at your own pace.
What You Can Expect
Every FA group has its own character, but here are some of the things you can expect when attending your first meeting.
When You Arrive
You will be welcomed by members of the group. You do not need to make any special arrangements beforehand or know anything about the Families Anonymous programme before attending. Simply come along and take things at your own pace.
You Don’t Have to Speak
There is no pressure to speak or share. You are very welcome to simply listen. If you would like to join in or ask a question, you can do so when you feel comfortable.
How the Meeting Works
Meetings may include readings from Families Anonymous literature and references to the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. Some of this may be unfamiliar at first, and that is absolutely fine. You do not need to understand everything straight away.
Sharing at the Meeting
Members share their own experience, strength and hope. You may hear experiences that feel familiar to you and others that do not. Everyone’s situation is different, and you can take what is helpful to you.
Anonymity & Confidentiality
Anonymity and confidentiality are fundamental to Families Anonymous. Only first names are used, and members make a commitment to respect each other’s anonymity and confidentiality. What is shared within an FA meeting stays within the meeting.
After Your First Meeting
Something may resonate with you immediately, or it may take several meetings before things begin to feel familiar. Give yourself time. There is no expectation that you will have all the answers after one meeting. You are welcome to come back and learn more at your own pace.
